Hi all I found out on Monday that I will start chemo next week. I am having a port put in today. I'm sure you all are familiar with this -but I though it was pretty interesting how it works and stuff so I put a post on my blog for my family and friends to see. If you want, you can check it out at: mommyeyes.blogspot.com/~Jolene

Hi Jolene, just wanted to wish you good luck with your chemo treatments...I still have my port in even though I had my last Chemo in Aug 07...my Onc suggested I leave it in since I would be continuing my infusions of Zometa for my bone mets, so I did...now I refer to it as "my best friend" since with all the surgeries I"ve had since then ...carpal tunnel, oral surgeries, blood drawn numerous times, my Zometa infusions...it's so easy with a port, and I've never had any trouble with mine...it is a real medical miracle what all they can do for us now to make things simpler! I love that you have a Blog...I wasn't as adept at the computer as you, but I do keep a journal, and am so glad that I have! Remember, my friend, we're here for you if you need anything...or just come visit to give us updates! Much love, Jane

Jolene, I pray that the port surgery will go well today and I believe that you'll be so glad that you went this way. I had 12 chemo treatment in my left hand back in 2000. If I ever have to have chemo again, I will have a port put in as my veins are shot now. Praying all will go well for you with the treatments and as Grits has said, we are here for you! Hugs, Sherrie

I had my port taken out in May of 2007.. guess what, they are putting it back in tomorrow and i start chemo, for the second time next month. I'm feelin your pain Jolene. The ice bag they give you for your chest really helps keep the swelling down. But it sure does make chemo easier. Your in my prayers, girl. Belle (Lori)

Thanks guys - yesterdays surgery wasn't much fun - they didn't put me to sleep just used a local sedation - but I was awake for the whole thing and felt the whole thing - They had to keep giving me more injections for pain and I started crying (which I hate) and then couldn't stop crying - So glad to be done with that.

Oh hun, I sympathize with you... You will be so glad you have the port, though. It really saves your veins with all the sticks for blood work, IV's, etc. I love your blog - thanks for sharing it. Love and hugs, Mary

Jolene...I'm so sorry to hear about your port surgery...did they give you a reason for the type of anesthesia they used? I was completely out and didn't wake up until everything was done. I feel awful for you that you had to go through the procedure with just a local...prayers that you're doing better today and I promise you will be glad that you have the port in the coming weeks. Hugs, Jane

Mary - Thank you for your comment - I enjoy having the blog as a way to share - orginally it was about being a mom and how I saw life thru my "mommy eyes" a way to share about my kids but latley it's turned into a Cancer blog - I'm hoping things calm down soon and I can get back to writing more about my lil MEN.
Grits- I don't do well with anesthesia (coming out of it) and since this was a "simple" procedure, they didn't want to put me all the way asleep - most people don't feel any pain or remember most of the surgery while sedated - Lucky me -things didn't quite go that well - I definitely want to be all the way our for anything else.
I am doing better now that I took my pain med. My husband is out of town shooting pix today so my boss and friends took the boys for me today so I can sleep. I'm headed back to bed shortly.
Thank you for the prayers. ~Jolene

Jolene, You certainly have a lot to cope with. Good luck on your chemo and hope it goes better than the surgery. Since you cried, I hope you wailed and bellowed and whined a LOT and got on their nerves!!! That way, maybe next time, they will make sure you are numb before performing surgery. There are a lot of ways to skin a cat!!!! Kitty

I'm not about to throw my "ignorance" in the ring here about what a Dr should or shouldn't be doing...BUT...I have a history of Panic Attacks coming out of anesthesia...so my Anestisiologist had a long conversation with me before my surgery and we agreed with some meds for anxety...I still had a "lights out" procedure. The important thing is...the port is in and I'm praying that your Chemo treatments go as smooth as possible for you. God Bless you and your beautiful family! Keep us "tuned-in", and remember we care! Hugs, Jane (Grits)

Jolene, if it's nausea/vomiting that is the problem when you are coming out of anesthesia, ask them to give you both Zophran and a scopolamine patch behind your ear. (I am the Queen of throw-up from anesthesia.... lol.. and I've learned the hard way. This combo. worked for me the last time and I had to keep the patch on for 3 - 4 days after surgery too....) My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Love and hugs, Mary
