i was diagnosed in 2002 with Stage 2b Breast Cancer. Prior to that i had many scares with lumps, having had 2 lumpectomies that were benign. About a year prior to my dx, i found a huge lump in my armpit, and showed my husband. he said 'you should get that checked'. and i stupidly NEVER did! however, in April 02, i found a tiny lump in my breast, and immediately went to the doctor. The doctor also found another larger lump in my breast and of course felt the lump in my armpit. To make a long story a bit shorter, 2 of the 3 lumps were cancerous. i had all three removed which ended up being a partial mastectomy.
i ended up having a/c chemo, 33 rads and did Tamoxifen and Femara. I just recently graduated from 3 mo visits to 6 month ones. I chose a rather unorthodox way of battling my cancer. i chose humor! i laughed at every chance i could. i let people laugh at or mock my cancer. for instance, if i dropped something at work, i would say 'Excuse me, can you pick that up, i have cancer'. People were shocked, but after the shock wore off, i found that they were comfortable talking about it, joking about it. I believe this is why i got thru treatment relatively unscathed. i never missed a day of work during treatment, never got sick, and pretty much enjoyed it every step of the way. i am 100 percent positive humor is what got me through it so easily!
since treatment, i've had 3 more biopsies for microcalcifications, but they were needle biopsies, and although uncomfortable, were easier to deal with and also benign.
i say to you all, enjoy life, and try humor to deal with it. It can only help! xoxo
